ART OR DECONSTRUCTION

CANADIAN ARTIST USES SCREWS TO PAINT PRIME MINISTER

Toronto artist claims government funding cuts inspired him to use basic construction materials to create his latest art work. TORONTO, ONTARIO–(Marketwire – February 26, 2009) - A lack of federal funding and understanding of the needs of the arts community has brought unexpected hardship on those whose livelihood depends on the arts, claims artist Viktor Mitic. A recent comment by Stephen Harper has aroused anger in the arts community. Author Margaret Atwood wrote :” It’s been suggested that Mr. Harper’s disdain for the arts is not merely a result of ignorance or a tin ear - that it is “ideologically motivated.” All children are born creative. It’s the lack of any appreciation of these activities that is not ordinary. Mr. Harper has demonstrated that he has no knowledge of, or respect for, the capacities and interests of “ordinary people.” Toronto artist Viktor Mitic describes his recent portrait of Stephen Harper: “These tough economic times exacerbated by a slap in the face by Mr. Harper have made me think harder about saving and survival – so I decided to use basic construction materials to create my portrait of Harper. I bought a sheet of plywood and 1500 screws from the local hardware store. Then I carefully screwed the details of the portrait of our P.M. onto this board. A friend suggested a name “Screw Harper” as an appropriate name for this piece.

Amor Fati by Zara

April 3rd - May 2nd, 2009

Opening Reception - Friday, April 3rd, 7 - 11 pm

Zara Diniz was born in Toronto, Ontario and is an artist recognized for her work as a painter and muralist. As a graduate of the Ontario College of Art and Design, she has worked on commissions for clients and charities and is now an art educator.

As a visual artist, she delves in the simplicity of painting and the expressive nature of its creation. She creates paintings that capture the medium’s material stages while still depicting people and objects in their utmost familiarity. This unique synthesis of high realism and expressive painting marks her distinctive surrealist style.

Amor Fati

“For the birth of life is a love that accepts death…and dreams of forgiving breath” Zara

Amor Fati is a narrative that retraces a spiritual journey where one falls back into the world and becomes fragile again. That is, where novel moments – revealing a passion for life, are consumed by a downward spiral into darkness, and carried forward – bringing consciousness to spiritual light.

If “Argumentum ex Silentio” symbolizes that enlightened moment where the memory of the heart is visible; then “Mutatio” and “A Fortorio” emphasizes that pivotal moment when the empty void in the heart attracts one to the unknown. Revealing that moment of union and connection through love; “Credere”, then depicts our protagonist’s encounter with another.

The work moves toward a state where woman finds man – and where, together, they change with every form of passage, evolving within processes of consciousness and coming to an understanding of how humanity experiences the world through the human heart.
